Classification and Advantages and Disadvantages of Power Plant Air Cooling Systems

There are three main types of power plant air cooling systems: direct air cooling systems, indirect air cooling systems with surface condensers (Hamon system), and indirect air cooling systems with jet (mixed) condensers (Heiler system). The advantages of direct air cooling systems are low initial investment and easy achievement of uniform and stable distribution of cooling air at all atmospheric temperatures; the disadvantages are high power consumption of fans and direct heat exchange between cooling air and turbine exhaust steam. The advantages of the Hamon system are no power consumption, no direct heat exchange between cooling air and turbine exhaust steam, and adjustable cooling water volume according to the season; the disadvantages are the use of steel finned tube bundles and surface condensers, mostly steel equipment, and high initial investment. The advantages of the Heiler system are lower investment and less main plant building area; the disadvantages are complex system and direct contact between cooling water and turbine exhaust steam.
